Itahoba is a Choctaw word meaning “connection” — but at a level that’s hard to express using any one English word. In 2004, when I first wanted to use a Choctaw term to describe the kind of connection that is important to me, I contacted our tribal language experts, most of whom are Elders. I thank these Elders for teaching me in the precise word that would express the sort of connection I wanted to describe. Yakoke to all of you. We are all richer for your presence and wisdom.

And in case you’re wondering, “Halito” means “hello” in Choctaw. “Yakoke” means “thank you.”
